Also of note, “Strong increases are expected for K-seal pouches—especially with heavier liquids, such as hand soaps and wet soups—and for corner-bottom pouches, particularly in applications such as frozen desserts and lawn and garden products.”
Analysts maintain, “Stand-up pouches—particularly spouted and inverted types—are gaining a wider presence among retail sauces and condiments, with a number of introductions by major brands in recent years.” Condiments such as mayonnaise, honey, peanut butter, barbecue sauce and guacamole spreads, for example, are increasingly packaged in inverted pouches such as FTA member Glenroy’s STANDCAP pouch.
Nonfood markets will also see fast increases in stand-up pouch use, particularly in applications that benefit from the use of spouted types, according to Freedonia. “Growth opportunities exist in refill pouches for hand soaps and other cleaning and personal care products, motor oils, and topical and liquid pharmaceuticals.”
Acknowledging a challenging 2020 operating environment, statisticians claim, “While decelerating slightly in 2020 amid the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, sales of stand-up pouches are not expected to see the declines felt in many other industries. Demand will continue to be supported by their widespread use with essential items such as food, beverages, and pet food, and by their expanding presence in household cleaning supplies, personal care products and pharmaceuticals.”
Speeding Adoption
The complexity of converting existing packaging machinery has prevented faster adoption of stand-up pouches to a certain extent, as market observers admit that producers face the:
- Direct cost of new equipment
- Opportunity cost of lost efficiency, since conventional methods of filling rigid cans, bottles and cartons still operate at a higher efficiency than newer pouch filling alternatives
Today, however, Freedonia researchers contend that, “This difference in efficiency is being reduced by newer pouch filling machinery that offers improvements such as faster size changeover, automatic roll change of packaging materials and automatic adjustments.”
