Innovation & Technology Born from Frustration
Wednesday, April 22, 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Session Chairs: Stuart Beeson, Sandon Global & Johnny Stamey, Daetwyler
New technologies is the topic. Our focus is to make sure your company is looking at new technology to help it be the best printer you can be in 2020 and beyond! Specifically:
- We want to look at companies that were investing in new technology for sustainability in the pressroom, pull from the best, and get them together on stage
- We need manufacturers to share with the printers how hard they are working to develop new technology
- Manufacturers must answer questions like: What is driving the focus? How will this help printers? Why should a converter invest in new technologies?
Our great communicators are:
- Paul Teachout, VP/sales & marketing, Nilpeter USA: Paul has more than 35 years of packaging experience, has held a number of positions and is very active in FTA. He has chaired FORUM and now serves on FTA’s Board of Directors and FFTA’s Board of Trustees. His knowledge of printing and FTA is an asset to have
- Peter J Mulheran, VP & GM, Eaglewood Technologies: Peter has many years in the business; he and his company are at the forefront of laser cleaning technology
- Dennis Hughill, regional sales director, Bobst, Western Hemisphere: Dennis has earned a master’s degree in language education and has the high ability of professional communication in three languages
- Brad Gasque, technical service consultant, DuPont Advanced Printing: Brad is a 2011 graduate from Clemson University, with a BS in graphic communications. He has spent the last five years with DuPont on its Technical Support Team. Introducing and working on new technology is his passion and serves as the driving force behind his work
- Mickey Bower, technical manager, Interflex Laser Engravers: Mickey has 30+ years in the printing industry, the last 23 with Interflex. Implementing innovative new technology daily requires his continuous involvement in training pressmen and supporting pressroom staff
- John Gaber, director global projects, Flint Group: John has 28 years of printing knowledge and leads his team in continued excellence. He drives projects domestically and around the globe. His international knowledge of printing inks helps lead us into the future of new ink developments
Each member of the team is a subject matter expert in their field—press, ink, plate, anilox roll and support equipment—all manufacturers. Bobst, DuPont, Eaglewood, Flint Group, Interflex and Nilpeter are all world-class industry leaders in technology in their respective fields and with a string of prestigious accolades, too.
Each of our presenters sees and lives the daily challenges of pressroom manufacturing. By understanding the struggles, they know the importance of new technology. Here is a look at what will be covered:
Paul Teachout, “The Narrow Web Factory of the Future.” We will show how narrow web technologies of today have overcome the converter challenges of workforce and efficiency. Then, we’ll examine how the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), automation and FIRST methodologies have provided a modern process to attract a workforce that has been raised on disruptive technologies. Modern presses are managed by automated process control and operated through wireless clean-hand technology solutions, providing the most repeatable and consistent production.
Peter J. Mulheran, “Superior Anilox Inventory Management with Laser Cleaning.” Peter will outline the benefits of laser cleaning over chemical-based solutions and speak to the positive effect on the environment, focusing on sustainability for the future of your company, while increasing performance and quality.
Dennis Hughill, “Converted Barrier Solutions for the Sustainable Economy.” Hear from Dennis how press manufacturers are working on the use of next-generation extrusion and polymers that will help with the looming target of the 2025 sustainability pledge.
John Gaber, Brad Gasque, Mickey Bower, “White Ink: The Struggle Is Real.” The roundtable discussion, featuring our panel of ink, plate and anilox roll experts, will discuss how we apply and measure ink. Just because we measure one way, doesn’t make it correct. They will attack pinholing, opacity, mottle and graininess, and how they can be avoided by using the latest technology.
Plus, they’ll look at how using new engraving types will improve white ink laydown while decreasing blade wear. Additionally, the three will provide insight into how a different anilox roll cell geometry can increase coat weight and transfer. Finally, the trio will demonstrate how new formulas and additives can improve white ink’s performance. They will combine that with the latest plate improvements and technologies, and present the total package to help make white ink issues a thing of the past.
Every component in a pressroom—no matter size or significance—can have its issues, so we need industry leaders to do what they do best—innovate.
