Lars Eriksen and Peter Eriksen, third and fourth generation owners, lead Nilpeter toward new historical milestones in the firm’s centennial year, 2019.

Detail…Precision…Individuality…Value—Nilpeter AS has been leveraging technology, conducting research, pursuing perfection and leaving nothing to chance for 100 years. As the firm celebrates its centennial throughout 2019, it remains committed to the delivery of future-proof, flexible, efficient, profitable and innovative solutions that enhance the competitive posture of each and every printing plant it supports.

Quality remains first and foremost on the mind of all Nilpeter team members every step of the way. Among their collective success stories: placing automation at the fingertips of press operators and packaging converters across the globe.

Decade after decade, their endeavors manifest themselves in their abilities to make each successive generation press, simpler, friendlier, more intuitive and efficiency enhancing than its immediate predecessor, thereby continually strengthening customers’ return on investment.

It all started with newspaper printing machines and later evolved to include rotary printing presses that today transcend the realm of flexo, offset, gravure and digital models.

Multi-Process Mindset

Nilpeter reports that it produces 120-140 label and flexible packaging presses each year, all custom-made to fit the needs of the individual customer. Consistent quality is a key driver, achieved through in-house manufacturing of all vital components, high levels of automation, and comprehensive quality control.

“In house, we master flexo, UV flexo, offset, screen printing, gravure, digital UV inkjet, and numerous value-adding converting technologies,” the company reports. With thousands of man-years of combined experience within narrow web solutions, application technology, process management, LEAN management and close partnerships with leading OEM-suppliers, Nilpeter remains committed to making its competences available to its customers.

Over the course of a century, the firm has grown into an international company with a truly global reach, evident by its major manufacturing facilities in Europe, the United States and Asia, a staff of 500 employees worldwide, and subsidiaries, branch offices, and agents in 65 different countries. All embrace the company’s global customer care strategy to deliver high level support to local and multinational printing companies.

Engineers have steadfastly pushed the boundaries of technical excellence and developed innovation after innovation that have shaped and continue to shape the label printing industry. Danish tradition for clean design lines, mixed with a high level of functionality is a constant priority in the development phase, and is evident in today’s product lines—from The All New FA, the most versatile flexo press on the market, to the digital PANORAMA Hybrid, and the MO-4 premium quality combination offset press. Nilpeter’s developments in press design cater to a new generation of machine operators that requests a modern operator interface and intuitive handling.

Five modern Technology Centers located in Denmark, USA, Thailand, India and Brazil have the latest products on display, provide the perfect scene for engaging with printers and project a strong vision for the future. Moreover, co-suppliers and industry partners utilize the facilities to test new technology trends in a local setting.

Historical milestones are presented in the timeline at the end of this story.

Nilpeter’s manufacturing facilities are famous for innovative design—no interior walls in the manufacturing hall and no closed doors or offices. The concept is exemplified by both the Slagelse, Denmark (top left) and Cincinnati, OH Technical Centers.

Intuitive & Ever Evolving

Maintaining that, “Innovation is in our DNA!” Nilpeter contends, “Innovation will continue to lead us through new packaging trends and converter requirements.” It even lists out specifics:

  • Current machine innovations are clean hand technology solutions for a generation raised on disruptive technologies
  • Platforms designed with smart controls, wireless operation, CLEANINKING systems and Nilpeter’s own clean hand engineering, provide appealing technology that can be operated via a scientific and methodical approach
  • Next generation press platforms equate to sophisticated solutions that engage with a new workforce

Looking to support its clients in future-proofing their print and packaging operations, the press manufacturer forecasts:

  • Disruptive technologies will continue to influence packaging design and printing trends
  • Virtual and augmented reality solutions will be commonplace at the consumer level
  • Interactive packaging is right in front of us
  • E-tail and retail packaging is here to stay
  • A new generation of dynamic packaging designs will offer innovations in security, anti-counterfeiting, printed electronics and so much more
  • Smart packaging requires smart presses

Poised on the precipice of the 21st century’s second decade, Nilpeter’s promise is much the same as it was in 1919: “New generation presses must be faster, better and easier to operate than ever before.”

Its resounding pledge: “We will embrace new technologies and manage them into machine designs and production workflows.”

  • Presses with the fastest changeovers and minimal waste are to be expected
  • New innovations will provide the solutions Nilpeter’s partners need to advance into the next generation of packaging design and production
  • Automation, with its efficiency and productivity benefits, is what will keep flexo technology competitive in the future, particularly in the short run/quick-turn consumer goods packaging marketplace
