Industry News

Josh Sigmon, VP sales, Harper Corporation, an emerging leader in the package printing and converting industry, recently sat down with FTA to have a conversation about his initial exposure to flexography, very early career, newly found role as a mentor and navigating the complexities of the global market.

FTA: Let’s talk about your journey in package printing. As a past participant and now staunch advocate for the Phoenix Challenge, can you comment on the impact that had on you?

SIGMON: The Phoenix Challenge had a huge impact on me both personally and professionally. As a participant, it was my first exposure to the flexographic printing industry, and it opened my eyes to the endless career opportunities available in this field. It gave me hands-on experience, built my confidence and ultimately set me on the path to where I am today.

Now, as a long-time advocate and judge for the competition, I see it as my opportunity to give back—to mentor and inspire the next generation just as I was once inspired. Seeing students push their creativity and technical skills reinforces why I’m so passionate about this industry. I take great pride in helping people realize the possibilities that flexography has to offer.

FTA: Since we are touching on entering the industry, can you talk a little bit about how that experience was for you? Any wisdom that you can share with those who may be going through that same part of their career?

SIGMON: My journey into the flexographic printing industry began right after high school with Harper Corporation, where I started in the final inspection department, building shipping containers. At the time, I had no knowledge of the industry, but that quickly changed.

The Phoenix Challenge introduced me to the technical side of printing and helped me realize that my potential could go far beyond what I had imagined. The connections and experience I gained through my time at Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) and the competition played a huge role in shaping my path.

In fact, it gave me the confidence and network to move 1,000 miles from home to pursue my bachelor’s degree at the University of Central Missouri. Thanks to those industry connections and the support of the Phoenix Challenge, I was able to secure a job in printing at Art Lithocraft Co. (ALC), which allowed me to work full-time while going to school. That experience set the foundation for everything I’ve done since.

For anyone just starting out, my advice is to take every opportunity to learn, network, and get hands-on experience. This industry is full of incredible people who are willing to help those who show passion and drive—so don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and build those relationships. You never know where they might take you!

FTA: That’s solid advice. Since we are on the subject of “everything you’ve done since,” what has it been like to be VP, sales at Harper as an emerging leader in this industry? Where have been the challenges? The victories?

SIGMON: Being VP sales at Harper has been an incredible journey, both challenging and rewarding. Stepping into a leadership role in this industry has given me the opportunity to work with teams and customers across the world, helping to drive innovation and growth in the flexographic printing industry.

One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the complexities of a global market, each region presenting unique opportunities and obstacles. From adapting to different business cultures to staying ahead of evolving technologies, it requires constant learning and adaptability.

That said, the victories make it all worth it. Seeing the impact of our team’s work, whether it’s helping a customer solve a critical printing issue, launching new solutions, or mentoring the next generation of industry professionals, it is very fulfilling. I take great pride in being part of an organization that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in flexography.

More than anything, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t just about driving sales; it’s about building relationships, creating opportunities, and making a lasting impact on the industry. That’s what keeps me motivated every day.

FTA: We look forward to seeing where your path continues to lead you and working with you while you walk it.

SIGMON: As a final point, beyond the professional successes, this industry has shaped my personal life in ways I never expected. When I moved to Missouri to finish my degree, I joined the UCM Phoenix Challenge team and that’s where I met my beautiful wife. We recently welcomed our first child, Baby Lincoln, on Oct. 23, 2024, making him the first-ever “Phoenix Challenge baby.”

I truly cannot express enough how much this industry has changed my life, both professionally and personally. It has given me a career, a purpose, and a family, and that’s something I will always be grateful for.
