Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. To be sustainable, one must consider the impacts on the three Ps – People, Planet and Profit.
Flexographic printing has been on the forefront of sustainability for nearly two decades. Improved printing techniques and technologies have allowed users to reduce air pollution and waste, improve health and safety, operate efficiently and save money.
FTA offers programs that can help make printers and suppliers become more sustainable. This includes support of certification by the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership (SGP) and providing information on relevant environmental, health and safety topics.

Sustainable Green Printing Partnership
The SGP is an independent certification organization FTA helped found in 2008. SGP serves the need for printers of all types to validate their sustainability efforts to print buyers.

Sustainability Excellence Awards
Each year, FTA recognizes companies that have gone above and beyond in their quest to become more sustainable. Winners have demonstrated superior performance in process improvements and technical innovations leading to more sustainable flexographic printing.

Sustainability Committee members often have the opportunity to participate as judges in the Sustainability Excellence Awards, comment on state and federal regulations, and provide input on the development of the SGP.

SmartWay
FTA is an affiliate of the US Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay and promotes the program to its members. SmartWay provides truck owner-operators assistance and information to achieve improved fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impacts from freight transport.
